19 Jun Treating Jaw Pain & Headaches
Do you suffer with headaches, jaw ache or a painful jaw joint?
It’s possible you may be suffering from a condition called TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction – although saying this repeatedly may actually result in TMD 😬).
What is TMD?
TMD is a series of conditions relating to the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. Symptoms can vary but the most common include:
- Muscle pain
- Tired jaw muscles when chewing or opening for extended periods
- Locking jaw
- Inability to open widely
Pain can be referred from the jaw, so sometimes an ‘ear ache’ or ‘tooth ache’ can actually result from a jaw issue in a different area.
What can be done about it?
There are a number of different treatments but the most common methods include using types of splint. No these aren’t what you’re thinking – no wires or bits of wood involved 😀. A splint is a clip-on covering for your teeth which can be removed (usually during the day). A splint helps to re-align the jaw in a more favourable position so the tissues can heal and settle down.
Who should I see if I want treatment?
Your dentist is the best person to speak to about your condition and will be able to talk you through all the treatment options to come up with a solution which is best for you
